State College Area Roller Derby is a skater owned and operated women's flat-track derby league in State College, Pennsylvania.
A BRIEF HISTORY
It was the fall of 2010, and a low rumble could be heard in Happy Valley. A handful of women had discovered each other through social networking sites and began hitting the local open skates. Their goal? Roller Derby.
By October the rumble had turned into a dull roar. State College Area Roller Derby held its first practice on October 20th. Open recruitment continued until February 1, 2011, and girls continued to show up until the very last day! SCAR decided to hold its first exhibition scrimmage on February 13, 2011, and debuted to an audience of 700 fans! The roller derby roar was deafening in State College.
Today, the nearly forty skaters and officials that comprise SCAR Derby are very excited about embarking on their second full season with both inter- and intra-league bouts. The league continues to grow, to add new fans and friends, and to grow in its relationship with Women's Flat Track Derby. (WFTDA)
MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of State College Area Roller Derby is to educate the public, support our local community, embrace the mystique, and redefine the concept of women's athleticism within the State College Region.
EDUCATE
The vision of State College Area Roller Derby is to promote our sport by allowing athletes to experience the thrill of flat track roller derby. Our organization is open to any amateur skater of any size and ages 18 or older, and we encourage our skaters to train at any level they wish. Our skaters show their support to community and team by participating in local charity events and parades, while others may aspire to pursue the sport to include a competition team. Today's skater can expect to experience all the healthy competition of any structured sport as well as the freedom to pursue roller derby at a recreational level.
ATHLETICISM
In the past roller derby had been portrayed as spectacle or exhibition, comprised of traditionally female professional skaters in costumed regalia. The gender bias of the day regarded roller derby as full contact entertainment, but hardly a sport. A skater today can expect to find attitudes of competitiveness and healthy aggression, both of which are hallmark to the sport of roller derby. State College Area Roller Derby is an organization started by women for women, and is dedicated to empowering women to feel free to embrace their inner athlete. State College Area Roller Derby aspires to be a healthy athletic outlet befitting the tenacity and spirit intrinsic to the women of the State College Area.
